The born criminal

After conducting his research on over 25.000 criminals and mental patients all over Europe, Lombroso came to the conclusion that born criminals form “about one third of the mass of offenders” (Ferrero, 8) and they represent a reversion to a primitive or subhuman type of man characterized by physical features reminiscent of lower primates. He became convinced that criminals were not a variation of the species, but a whole different subspecies of man, with different mental and physical characteristics than the normal person. After the finding of the median occipita fossa, the Italian criminalist expresses his idea that the born criminal is the product of a regression, an atavistic anomaly whose characteristics are more similar to those of his remote ancestors than his contemporaries.
