Jean-Martin Charcot

Unknown-1Jean-Martin Charcot

(1825-1893)

Jean-Martin Charcot was a French neurologist in the mid to late nineteenth century. He became known as one of the founders of modern neurology, but he also made large contributions to the field of psychiatry. In his work at the Salpetriere Hospital in Paris, he focused on defining hysteria as a neurological disease and set the stage for later investigations into hysteria.

I studied transcripts of Charcot’s clinical lectures at the Salpetriere to determine his overall understanding of hysteria and how this shaped his treatment methods.
